Our physios are highly experienced and skilled in dry needling, and will often use it as a very effective component of your overall injury treatment.
Dry needling should not be confused with acupuncture, as the only real similarity is the type of needles used.
What is dry needling?
Dry needling (trigger point dry needling) is where extremely small diameter needles are used to stimulate and relax a trigger point (knot) in a muscle. Often a twitch response is felt in the muscle (similar to your knee-tendon reflex when hit with a reflex hammer) which will relax the trigger point (knot) in the muscle.
A good analogy is “rebooting your computer”, as the dry needling acts to reboot your tight and knotted muscle.
Dry needling is relatively pain-free and usually takes only a few seconds to complete for a particular muscle.
