Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP)

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is an allied health professional trained extensively in safe and effective exercise prescription. An AEP has the firm belief that “exercise is medicine” making it their primary role to prevent, manage and treat complex medical conditions and injuries. AEPs utilise their skills in exercise prescription, combined with their training in behaviour change, to empower clients and assist them to eventually self-manage their health independently in the future.

An AEP can work extensively with your treating physiotherapist to assist with treating and managing your injury through developing;

  • Long term strength and conditioning programs for work, sporting or chronic injury (such as lower back pain)
  • Falls prevention programs for the elderly or those who are at risk of falls
  • general fitness program for those who just need a bit of direction

AEP’s also treat complex chronic conditions such as;

  • heart disease
  • obesity
  • diabetes
  • mental illness
  • autoimmune diseases (ie multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease)
  • some cancers
  • osteoporosis
  • osteoarthritis

… and the list goes on. Treatment can be made through one-on-one consultations or group exercise classes (maximum of three people per class). Private health fund rebates from most Health Funds apply for Exercise Physiology consultations. Also, those referred for a chronic disease management plan from their GP will receive Exercise Physiology coverage by Medicare.
